Texas Hold’em Betting Rules
One of the first things that players need to learn when starting off on their poker adventure is the different betting rules out there. While there are number of poker variants that will see the betting rules changing, there are basic rules that stay the same throughout all the games.
Before a game of poker begins, players need to put a certain amount of money into the pot – either through an ante or a blind.
Ante: If the poker game is played with an ante, this simply means that each player needs to contribute a certain amount before the beginning of each hand. The ante is not considered a bet, per se. It is considered a way in which to get the game of poker started.
Blind: Another name for a blind is a forced bet, and from this we learn the nature of this type of bet. Players are forced to make a bet before seeing the card ie. They go into the bet ‘blindly’. These blinds are predetermined before the game starts.
There are typically two blind bets played – the big blind and the little blind. The little blind is placed by the player to the dealer’s left, while the big blind is placed to his or her left. The big blind is traditionally equal to the smallest possible bet, while the little blind is half of that amount.
There are several options that a player is faced with around a poker player – to call, check, raise or fold.
Call: If a player calls a bet, it means that he or she is matching the previous bet made by the opponent and can thus stay in the game of poker.
Raise: The player bets higher than any bets made by players in the preceding round of the game. The other players around the table then have to decide what action to take (call, raise, check or fold).
Fold: If players feel that they don’t have much chance in succeeding in any subsequent betting rounds, they have the option of folding their hands. This means that they throw in their cards and thus give up any chance of winning the pot. All bets are also forfeited, making this a decision that should not be taken lightly!
Check: Players choose to refrain from betting, yet they still stay in the game.
There are a number of general betting rules that cover most kinds of poker variants as follows:
Players are not allowed to bet out of turn.
There is no limit to the number of raises permitted in a no limit poker game.
Whatever move players say they will make is verbally binding.
Non-verbal gestures are also important in poker and are also binding. For example, rapping on the table and moving chips forward.
In conclusion, players should take time out to read up and learn the betting rules of poker before hitting the tables.
